Blue Ridge Barbecue Festival

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

We love this annual barbecue  festival. It’s June 11 and 12 at Harmon Field in nearby Tryon. With competitors from many states, the food is amazing. The festival is very well organized. Parking and shuttle services run very efficiently. There is ample room to wander around, visit the booths, or just relax and enjoy a good variety of live music.

Free Ice Cream

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

The annual Celebrate Flat Rock day will be held this Saturday, June 5.  It’s always a fun afternoon for the younger kids. They get free ice cream, face-painting, balloon-making, and fake tattoos.

For the adults there’s good live music, pottery making, a half-price day at the Book Exchange, and walking tours of the Carl Sandburg house. And at 8 PM, the NC State Theater at Flat Rock Playhouse presents Old Glory, a critically acclaimed musical.

White Squirrel Festival

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Yesterday Dianne took our 9 year old granddaughter, Emilie, to the annual White Squirrel Festivalin Brevard. They had a blast. Emilie came home with her face painted and all excited about the bouncy balls and inflatable slides she romped on. Dianne said the music was great and there were some really unique craft booths. And of couse, lots of food.

The town was trying to set a Guinness record for the most people in white squirrel costumes.  The TV crews were there to capture it all. We don’t know yet if the record was broken.

I asked Emilie to bring me back a squirrel sandwich or a “squirrel-on-a-stick”. She said she looked all over the festival but couldn’t find any. Ah, there’s nothing like the sense of superiority that comes from fooling a 9 year old!
